sO, WHAT EXACTLY IS INSIDE A HYDRANT? By cleaving, then bolting the halves back to back, we are left with two improbable floating iron and bronze leaves who's secrets are now an open book.

Provenance

Hydrant shown is from Somoma California. We have SF hydrants in the wings for our next commission.

We all know steel rusts, so all of the valving is made out of some kind of bronze, impervious to water. The long cut we took through the hydrant revealed solid screw mechanisms and fittings all in bronze inserted within an iron outer shell whose insides were frosted with a thick coating of flaky rust. We sandblasted the interior rust and when the valving got blasted (as you can see in the pic above) it looks copper like a penny.
